A traditional part of coastal community diets for centuries, it is now enjoying a renaissance as seaweeds and algaes increase in popularity and have become part of a mainstream diet – especially among foodies and health and fitness fans.

Rich in vitamins and minerals and a great source of natural protein, it can be eaten as a snack or included in stews and soups.

The Irish Seaweed Company took us (carefully) over the rocks at Carnlough to show us just how labour-intensive dulse picking can be. We even tracked down the elusive ‘Pepper Dulse’ – known as the caviar of the sea!
